AM Best has downgraded State Farm General Insurance Company's (State Farm General) Financial Strength Rating to B (Fair) from A (Excellent) and its Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating to "bb+" (Fair) from "a" (Excellent), citing the company's weakened balance sheet, marginal operating performance, and the challenges it faces in its business environment. Although the Financial Strength Rating's outlook has been adjusted to stable, the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating maintains a negative outlook. This change is attributed to a significant decline in State Farm General's policyholder surplus and risk-adjusted capitalization as of December 31, 2023, exacerbated by increasing claim severities in certain lines of business. The negative outlook on the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating highlights uncertainties surrounding the company's capability to improve its financial stability amid profitability issues, adverse reserve developments, and regulatory challenges in California. Despite these concerns, the ratings acknowledge the support from its parent company, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, and note that management's efforts to address these issues may require time to effectively impact the company's financial health.
