😱This week’s OMG moment

Hurricane Debby, which strengthened on Sunday night, is set to make landfall in Florida’s Big Bend on Monday, bringing life-threatening storm surges, damaging winds, and torrential rain. The National Hurricane Center warns of potentially historic rainfall and catastrophic flooding from southeast Georgia to the eastern Carolinas between late Monday and Thursday, with some areas possibly receiving up to 30 inches of rain. Named on Saturday, Debby intensified over the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to strengthen further before coming ashore. It will then stall over the Southeastern states, causing widespread rainfall of 10 to 20 inches in southeast Georgia and South Carolina, accompanied by high-end tropical storm or hurricane impacts. On Sunday, Debby’s heavy rain bands and winds began affecting the Florida Peninsula, triggering flash-flood warnings and shoreline inundation. A state of emergency has been declared in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Hurricane warnings are in effect for Florida’s Big Bend, with tropical storm warnings extending south to Port Charlotte and north to Charleston, S.C. Storm surge warnings predict rises of up to 10 feet in the Big Bend and 3 to 5 feet around Tampa Bay.

🔒Insured losses from last month's CrowdStrike outages could exceed $1 billion, though this may be halved due to the non-malicious nature of the event, according to a report by Guy Carpenter. The July 19 incident, triggered by a security software update, is estimated to cost between $300 million and $1 billion in insured losses. The accidental nature of the outages and the absence of costs typically associated with malicious attacks, such as forensic experts and data restoration, may reduce the total loss. Despite the disruption, cyber insurers are maintaining coverage for clients. The event, which affected around 8.5 million Windows devices and caused significant air travel disruptions, underscores the vulnerability of digital supply chains. Although fewer than 1% of companies with cyber insurance were impacted, the potential severity of interconnected systems was highlighted. Other estimates, including from CyberCube, suggest the insured losses could reach $1.5 billion, marking this as a potentially record-breaking event in the history of cyber insurance.
