On April 23, 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor issued a final rule to increase the minimum salary threshold for white-collar workers to be exempt from federal overtime under the FLSA, effective July 1, 2024, impacting about four million employees and prompting potential reclassification or salary adjustments. The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) expressed their opposition to the overtime rule and will keep fighting and supporting efforts to delay the effective date of the final rule.

⛈️The federal government of Canada is set to introduce a national flood insurance program by next year, allocating $15 million for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan highlighted the program as part of broader efforts to enhance flood risk management and mitigation, including improved flood mapping in collaboration with provincial and territorial governments. The program aims to provide affordable insurance options for residents in high-risk areas, who currently face prohibitive insurance costs. Managed by a subsidiary of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the plan also involves a task force that began work in November 2022 and identified a significant annual flood insurance risk. The initiative seeks to reduce the current reliance on substantial taxpayer funds used for bailing out uninsurable, high-risk homes, with the future goal of integrating this flood insurance into regular insurance offerings through brokers. If you ask me (wich they haven’t), they should consider parametric flood insurance as a cost-effective solution.

😔Heavy rains in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, have resulted in 39 deaths and 68 missing, with record-breaking floods forcing over 24,000 people from their homes and surpassing historic 1941 flood levels. The state has experienced its fourth major flood in a year, damaging infrastructure, including a partially collapsed dam, and disrupting essential services like electricity and communications.
